Our Mission

Muses trains the next generation of apparel makers, empowering immigrant and refugee communities.

Our classes

Our core classes are taught by industry experts and give students hands-on experience in industrial sewing and machine operation. Additional classes teach students their rights as workers, leadership skills and develop their industry-specific job readiness.

Our students

Muses students come from all corners of the world, residing in the Seattle area as immigrants or refugees. Washington state is eighth in the nation for receiving refugees, and as many as 20% in King County are foreign-born.* Many immigrants and refugees resettling here have former sewing experience and are eager to find local careers that match their talents.

WHY INDUSTRIAL SEWING?

An increasing demand for “Made in the USA” apparel paired with the growing ethical fashion movement has created a surging demand for qualified industrial workers. As apparel work has been largely exported since the 1970s, local fashion designers and manufacturers are struggling to find qualified employees.

Our program gives these growing fashion industries access to talent. Muses students have existing sewing skills, which are then elevated and focused through classes to match the industry’s needs.

HOW DO WE IMPLEMENT OUR WORK?

We make an impact in multiple ways:

  • By offering professional training to underserved communities in need of dignified jobs with fair pay, social recognition and professional inclusion.

  • By creating a safe, inclusive environment that all can join, regardless of gender, religion, sexual orientation, or background.

  • Through our forward-thinking training program, which focuses on sustainable production practices, including – but not limited to – upcycling and garment repair.

  • Through close collaborations with local business and like-minded organizations to contribute to the economic development of Seattle.

“We have the ability to achieve, if we master the necessary goodwill, a common global society blessed with a shared culture of peace that is nourished by the ethnic, national and local diversities that enrich our lives”

— Mahnaz Afkhami, Iranian-American Human Rights Activist
